![]() A part of me thinks that this was almost intentional so the game would more resemble FNV but that just makes me feel like I'm playing a last-gen game. The character models are so stagnant and can be pretty bland in their expressions. The worlds can look nice but again not up to 2019 standards. I'm not crazy about a lot of the presentation of the game either. The combat in the outer worlds is so, so bland and it really feels last-gen which is pretty unacceptable for a game that came out a year before the PS5 came out. I started playing borderlands 3 after I finished most of the outer worlds and I realized that I had almost forgotten what a good shooter for 2019 standards felt like. Then there's Borderlands 3 which came out around the same time and the combat in that game is fucking awesome (it's a flawed game in itself but it definitely has that going for it) and I keep finding more and more awesome guns I can't wait to try out. Fallout 4 came out 4 years prior and the gunplay in that game is exponentially better in pretty much every way, with more creative guns, satisfying skills, better AI, and useful melee combat. I tend to compare the combat in this game to other shooter RPG's that came out in the PS4 and xbox one era that did combat so, so much better. It's never satisfying to kill any of the enemies like it is in other games. The combat in total is honestly kind of awful - there's like 2 good guns (a lot of the guns that I thought would be cool ended up sucking, like the flamethrower), melee combat is terrible and just useless, the AI is pretty damn bad at a lot of points, the enemies are nothing special and uncreative and at points tedious more than anything, and it just isn't fun to kill. This game tried so hard to be fallout new vegas that it ended up feeling and almost looking like a game from 2010. I think the best word that describes this game, in so many ways, is outdated. That being said, this is still a flawed game, especially for the year that it came out. I don't think every RPG needs to be 100+ hours long. It's almost bite-sized honestly, and that's fine because I get to the climax of the story sooner and don't need to worry about holding off on other games I want to play for so long. I've played a lot of Fallout and Elder Scrolls in my life and I love super large open world games but I'm fine with this game being shorter. Unlike a lot of other people I'm fine with this game being the length that it was. The gist of it is that I like The Outer Worlds a lot because it's a fun game with lots of humour but I also find it very frustrating and a little disappointing. ![]() I was planning on making a post about this after finishing MoE and I still might but I want to give my thoughts here. Making some players feel the game devs ran out of time or budget to flesh out and incomplete. The game maps and dialog feel emptier in end game, particularly Byzantium. Some people found characters and dialog forgettable. Someone here said that TOW does storytelling at 110%, which is very true and wouldn't strike true for some people. Specific type of dark humor, combined with very strong and simplified "capitalism bad" messaging. Not many side missions, and those that are there often link to the players understanding of the main story. Main story takes most of the narrative space. Similarly, the narrative is very linear, and most of the game's locations and side missions tie into the main story. You go from point A to B to C, then move on to the next map. It matches how the game story is told, but there isn't ever an open giant square of space to explore with 100s of locations and surprises. There's not a ton of variety in the weapons you get access to, and lots of players like variety. Companion to that, weapons and mods are streamlined. In a game where a solid chunk of game is spent in combat, lots of people want to have more of a challenge during that time. People who have some FPS game experience under their belt will likely find it pretty easy, even in Hard/Supernova modes. For members of that team to release a new game (in SPAAAACE!) was very exciting, and there was a lot of speculation about what we were going to get. Fallout New Vegas is one of the most loved games of all time. I think there's also a bit of a word-of-mouth snowball. TOW does each of these well, and there are people who find it really engaging (me!) But there are games that do some or all of these elements more comprehensively, going into more depth, detail, complexity, etc. If I was going to summarize, TOW includes elements of FPS combat, RPG, open world exploration, and universe building through lore and ambient storytelling components. ![]() ![]() But I've read a lot of commentary from people who don't.
